these aren't the stories
Scherezade told
night after night
to keep herself alive

these are a different form
of night stories
the darker ones
that came after
her tales were writen down

these are the ones
we tell to remember people
that won't be back again
not in this life

the pilots who flew
seeking
travelling far on metal wings
til the flight
went further in unexpected ways

sometimes they are wrapped
in mystery and void
disappearances in the gulf
the ones that simply
never came back

sometimes it comes
in fire and wind
ice and rain
and it is loss
such bright lives lost
like scattered ashes in the wind
bye bye blackbird

its a strange line
for to say good-bye
but in the right place
to the right person
it goes heart deep

it is a strange country
the land of tears
you can only reach
so far into another's

it is the twilight
the transformation
where great joy
becomes deep sorrow
because of the joy that was
and is no more

so for a moment
if you will
remember your twilight story
the one that means the most
raise a glass
shatter it if you will
and be glad that it was
sometimes the night stories
come in the day

as the artist paints
another picture
on the wall
a blue raven guide

elsewhere
a black bird flies
nearby
crows watching over heard
but not a murder

summer heat
river flowing high
cool waters to carry one
away from the burning sun

cool waters that pull
seeking to carry one
to the other side
til it comes out
life for a life

the first one in
lives
the second one
gets pulled out
three days later

back to the start
where the good night tale
comes under
the bright day's sun

so it is good night moon
and good night sun
and good night loon and wolf

good night raven
and good night hawk
good night Caribou
there is a sign
or a series of signs
that invite and warn

be bold
be bold
but not so bold
lest your blood it runs cold
courtesy of one mr fox

and elsewhere there
is a key and a room
that one is not supposed
to go into

well it is one of
many such rooms
warnings not to follow
with death as the price
if one dares to seek

sometimes with death
as the price
if one does not

in the shifting tides
of the night
the lines that keep one
safe get blurred
more than a little

nothing is certain
seeking might kill one
not seeking might
sometimes
the monsters are hard
to spot

it was not so
it were not so
and god forfend
it should be so

but the key is stained
past all mending
as the horror comes
crashing down
and its time
to test your exit plan
there is the this
about night tales
they aren't always safe

sometimes the heroes
don't quite make it out
alive
sometimes the readers
don't get to the end
unchanged

there is a darkness
that is mystery and wild
that slides into these tales
sometimes out of them
they are not tame

but it comes back
to the night and the dark
love, lust and death
and other things

which is part of why
it is not tame
not these tales
that dance the darkness
reflect it back to us
and bring us into it

sometimes
to bring us out of it
in the end

sometimes
to hold us in
its warm embrace
she waited at the crossroads
at night
waiting and hoping
knowing he would come
he had to come down
that path that night

but he would not come
alone

she had lost him once
had him taken away from her
and as she loved him
as he in turn
loved her
she wanted him back

but it was never
just that simple

he belonged to
someone else now
one that would not
easily let him go
to return to his heart

so she waited
for his horse
waited to hold him tight
no matter what form
he might be given
to hold on to him tight
to win him back again

before the story
is this moment of
waiting alone in the night
for him to come
along a path

in the distance
comes the sound
of horses
that will bring him to her
and bring her
into a contest
with she that owns him

that is coming
this fleeting silence
is now
sometimes the fullness
of the story
comes home at night
in the lights and warmth
of home and hall

but this is the ending point
the story started here
also
but that was long ago
the seasons past
and a harp was made

moments cascade through the lines
of a song and are compressed
brief sharp and short
the tensions underlying
the actions and the deeds
flitter just out of reach

a sister or was it two?
kill another for the love
of a man

they hide the body
did they also say
that she ran away?

and all is mostly well
til a harper passing by
with a harp newly made
sings the wrong song
or rather the very harp itself
sings the wrong song
and the truth comes out

sixth night

Jun. 9th, 2009 08:42 pm
the cup fills
swiftly so swiftly
the venom is emptied from the cup
then held back under
to catch the venom
that ever falls

but each moment
is too long
for there is a face
to catch the venom
if the cup does not

thus she is remembered
this moment
this part of the tale
holding a cup
then emptying it

is she looking forwards
is she looking back
is she in this moment
looking at a need
that never ends

sometime down the road
this task will end
her husband will come free
and something dark will come

the cup fills again
curses are heard
as she empties the cup
til she brings it
back so swiftly
that there must be love
in tales only she
now remembers

fifth night

Jun. 9th, 2009 08:41 pm
even after all these years
the night still remembers
and in the sky
far up in the heavens
a bridge is formed
in remembrance of love

maybe this love
should not have been
but love knows not boundaries
not of class or race
gender but a shallow sea
that it might cross over

but
this love it could not be
fulfilled
duty can bind
the heir as tight
as it binds the warrior
sacrifices must be made
sometimes the world
claims love

but the night
still remembers
that they loved true
letting them touch
even if but for one night
until the stars
fall into dust
the seven sisters danced
across the sky
so many stories cast
in their wake

but ever as they danced
or flew unto the sky
seeking refuge there
they were sisters fair
and so they danced
and sang and flew

time after time
people looked up
into the night sky
and found a story to tell
about them
these seven sisters
who tracked across the sky

so they looked up
sat down around the fire
and told the story
to explain the seven dancers
the sisters in the sky

as if that cluster
that grouping of stars
needed to be explained somehow
with many stories
to tell them unto beauty
and grace

third night

Jun. 9th, 2009 08:40 pm
you started your watch
at the twilight your
stayed quiet and focused
until the rising of the sun

the stories you remembered
were all said and done
there were no more to follow them
on that path

so you stood watch
for the stories that had been
for the person who gave
birth to those tales

you stood watch
and remembered
for one night
to honour that which was
until the new day began
each night began
with a story
carried on to hold
death at bay

each night
the story was unfinished
or if one ended
a new one took its place
night after night she told
stories to buy her days

elsewhere
not so far a way
another woman sits at a loom
unweaving what she did
during the day
night work to buy
another day to not choose

weaving word and thread
weft and warp merging
stories flowing across the loom
shuttled back and forth
as the heroes fortune's ebbed and flowed
sometimes the victor
sometimes with all coming undone

their lives mirrored
in a weaving that was never
meant to be finished
so a choice would not be made

while each night she told
another story of their days
stretching a night
into another day and another

these weavers share this also
their night work
kept their days flowing
to the fulfilment of their aim

first night

Jun. 9th, 2009 08:38 pm
all I have
are the stars
scattered in the sky
my hand
can not hold them
in my pocket now

but as I trace them
as the lines from one
to another form
the constellations
the stories scattered
in the night
the pieces form

they looked up
and founds stories
legends and patterns
a dance that told
what was
and what was to be

paths to trace
across land and sea
following the sky
so it begins here
on this night
another gathering
of stories mingled
paths overlapped

fact and fiction
and dream
til the day does come
